I don’t have to travel for work too often, but oh my goodness, if there is one situation that can knock me backwards with guilt, it’s the business trip. I can’t stand missing the daily download on school and friends, I feel guilty that I’m not there to pack lunches, I even feel guilty that my husband has to tackle everything on his own for a few days (even though he is completely capable and totally cool about it). Plus I never sleep well when I stay alone at a hotel, which makes me crazy. Why can’t I just relax and enjoy the big fabulous bed with the clean sheets all to myself?!?
The guilt is useless and a nonsense emotion, I realize that. And usually I can keep it more or less in check. But the business trip is my Achille’s heel; it gets me every single time.
So here’s the hack that makes me feel less guilty. Are you ready for the wisdom? Here it is:
Yes, I bring back my children a little something from every trip, even though our house is already filled to bursting with toys. Bribes, bribes, bribes. Sorry, not sorry.
Here’s the best part though: I don’t actually stress out about finding the bribe items. Instead, I have adopted this policy, which was suggested to me by another working mom: I buy items at the airport gift shop. You would be surprised how well a little knick knack goes over. My children have a fabulous collection of snow globes and refrigerator magnets from various cities, and they LOVE them. Even my daughter, who doesn’t quite read yet, can tell you where each snow globe is from.
So that’s my Wednesday advice for you, my mom comrades in arms. Buy your kid a bribe, but make it as easy as possible on yourself by starting a collection of items you can easily find at any airport gift shop. Everyone wins!
